Construction of new sports centre on Birkenweg, Bad Saulgau
Focus on sustainability and maintaining drinking water quality: new sports centre sets the standards to follow with solutions from SCHELL
A high level of investment plus stringent standards of sustainability and safety – the new sports centre project on Birkenweg in Bad Saulgau, Baden-Württemberg, is fit for the future in every respect. The digital SWS Water Management System and the networked electronic fittings from SCHELL ensure these standards are also met by the sanitary equipment. While SWS performs automated flushing processes and continuous monitoring to maintain drinking water quality even in periods of lower use, the electronic fittings ensure that usage is appropriate for demand, and therefore make a significant contribution to reducing the consumption of water and energy.

Challenge
When planning the sanitary equipment for the new sports centre on Birkenweg in Bad Saulgau, the project managers faced a number of specific challenges. During schooltime, the modern multi-use sports centre sees particularly heavy use by local schools as well as the MINT School of Excellence in Baden-Württemberg. In the school holidays, however, usage drops off considerably, with only limited periods of use or none at all during this time. This lack of use could cause water to stagnate in piping and increase the risk of Legionella. Accordingly, there were two points of focus for the design of the drinking water installation and the sanitary equipment used. On the one hand, operations needed to be energy/resource-efficient and user-friendly despite very high levels of use. On the other, the system also needed to accommodate requirements for monitoring and demand-driven management when operating the installation during periods of downtime.
Solution
With an eye on the ambitious sustainability and safety goals for this flagship new-build project, while also seeking to ensure drinking water quality as required by the German Drinking Water Regulation, project managers opted to install the SWS Water Management System plus a selection of electronic wash basin, shower and urinal fittings. The risk of excessive levels of Legionella bacteria is effectively mitigated – even during periods of downtime – by the SCHELL SWS Water Management System, which runs automated stagnation flushes according to current levels of demand. At the same time, the system enables the end-to-end logging of all operating conditions and flush operations. This provides the operator with evidence of compliance with the German Drinking Water Regulation – and therefore legal peace of mind.
A total of 33 electronic wash basin taps from the XERIS family were installed throughout the property. Thanks to their contactless infrared controls, these taps help to improve user hygiene while cutting water and energy consumption, as the flow of water stops automatically when the user moves their hands out of the sensor’s detection range. Overall, 39 LINUS D-C-T concealed showers were installed in the shower facilities at the sports centre. These electronic shower fittings are equipped with integrated CVD touch electronics with an automatic shut-off mechanism that also ensures the efficient handling of water as a valuable resource. In addition, the built-in ThermoProtect thermostat provides reliable, precise anti-scalding protection while ensuring user comfort. EDITION E urinal controls were also installed in the WC area. The contactless infrared sensors on these controls enable precise, user-based flush triggering, which therefore reduces the volume of water consumed to the minimum amount actually required. At the same time, the no-touch controls also significantly improve user hygiene: there is no potential for diseases to be transmitted by contact with the controls.
About the new sports centre on Birkenweg
The town of Bad Saulgau has invested just under EUR 14 million in the new sports centre on Birkenweg. Sustainability was a key point of focus for this new-build project. The property not only complies with the tough German green building standard ‘EH 40 Efficient Building’, but also exclusively uses raw materials that can be reused when the building is ultimately demolished. Resource-friendly product solutions from SCHELL have also contributed to the project’s sustainability-first approach. As one example, the hard-wearing wash basin taps from the XERIS family and the EDITION E urinal control system feature built-in infrared sensor controls. These not only improve user hygiene but also enable the economical use of water and energy for hot water heating.
