New building on the grounds of Sportpark Freiburger Turnerschaft 1844 e.V.

‘FT Sports Park Redevelopment’: using solutions from SCHELL to meet challenging requirements for hygiene and sustainability

The end result of the biggest renovation and redevelopment project in the club’s history was a modern building on the grounds of Freiburger Turnerschaft 1844 e.V. with sports, administration and fitness wings. For the sanitary facility fit-out, the owners and planners opted for SCHELL products, including the SWS Water Management System. The solutions chosen ensure hygienically safe and resource-friendly operations – even during significant fluctuations in facility use.

Challenge

The FT-Sportpark is typically very busy, with sporting competitions, kids’ tournaments and a wide range of leisure programmes keeping capacity utilisation high throughout the facility. During training hours and events, the sanitary facilities and drinking water installations are in virtually constant use. Not so during the holidays, however: visitor numbers drop off sharply and fittings are hardly used – which increases the risk of Legionella in the piping. The drinking water installation and its sanitary equipment therefore had to fulfil two key requirements. First of all, operations needed to be energy- and resource-efficient, and user-friendly even at peak times. Second, reliable monitoring and demand-driven management during periods of downtime – such as public holidays or school holidays – were also required.

Solution

To ensure they would be able to meet their requirements for hygiene, sustainability and user/operating comfort, the planners and owners decided to install the SWS Water Management System together with electronic shower fittings and wash basin taps. SWS makes it possible to achieve hygienically safe operation of an drinking water installation on a continuous basis at all relevant tapping points. Thanks to a hygiene-compliant water exchange with automated stagnation flushes, SWS helps to maintain drinking water quality even during periods of low usage – and therefore effectively minimizes the risk of high levels of Legionella. The system integrates easily with the planned central building control system, so maintenance work can be planned and completed efficiently and cost-effectively. Options for regular analyses, end-to-end documentation and reports provide an additional level of safety.

Electronic wash basin taps in the CELIS series are equipped with programmable infrared sensor controls. When networked with SWS, these contactless taps support good user hygiene while simultaneously minimising water and energy consumption: water only flows out of the tap when it is truly needed. When users move their hands out of the sensor’s detection range, the flow of water stops automatically.

A total of 63 concealed showers from the LINUS series with COMFORT Flex shower heads were installed in the new building’s shower facilities. The showers are operated by CVD touch electronics. The programmable closing mechanism also stops the flow of water automatically, helping to ensure the responsible handling of water as a precious resource. The integrated ThermoProtect thermostat offers reliable anti-scalding protection with precision temperature control – even if the cold water line fails.

In the WC facilities, MONTUS COMPACT II concealed urinal flush valves were installed, featuring contactless infrared sensor flushing controls from the EDITION E series. The front panel with infrared sensor window is vandal-resistant and therefore the perfect choice for facilities in public-use buildings. The panel is triggered when a hand passes into the detection area.

About the new building at Sportpark Freiburger Turnerschaft 1844 e.V.

Freiburger Turnerschaft von 1844 e.V. is a major sports club with over 7,000 members and a bright future. The ‘FT Sports Park Redevelopment’ marked the launch of the biggest renovation and redevelopment project in the club’s long history. Project goals: The aim was to reduce the high renovations backlog in the buildings and sports halls, while providing functional and visual enhancements to the club’s own sports halls. The end result was a new two-storey main building with a foyer, offices and fitness centre, adjacent to a generously sized spectator stand as well as new outdoor changing facilities. To provide optimum support for maintaining drinking water hygiene and protecting user health, modern product solutions from SCHELL were used in the fit-out of the corresponding sanitary facilities. At the same time, these products ensure the owners can operate the building sustainably, and so pursue their exemplary ecological and economic strategy.
