Otto Dullenkopf Playground and Action Park, Karlsruhe

Modernisation of the administration building in Otto Dullenkopf Park with the SCHELL SWS Water Management System and electronic fittings

A popular and many-faceted playground and action park for children and young people, Otto Dullenkopf Park in Karlsruhe includes a circus tent, an activity venue, training rooms, and rooms for use by groups or for seminars. The former bus depot on the site was extensively renovated as part of a conversion project. The SWS Water Management System and electronic taps from SCHELL now ensure first-class hygiene standards in the new sanitary facilities. Thanks to automated stagnation flushes, contactless operation and safety thermostats, reliable support is now provided for maintaining drinking water hygiene. User hygiene has also been improved, together with reliable anti-scalding protection – which is ideal for protecting the park’s many young patrons.

Challenge

Renovating the 1,900 m² office/industrial shed building in the old bus depot dating from the 1930s presented some demanding challenges for the drinking water installation. With around 300 to 400 children and young people attending the activities in Otto Dullenkopf Park every week, it was essential to maintain drinking water hygiene – even during park closures. The park owners also wanted to optimise user hygiene to minimise the risk of contact infections. Last but not least, reliable anti-scalding protection was essential, as the sanitary facilities are also used by (nursery) schoolchildren.

Solution

The park owners decided to install the SCHELL SWS Water Management System together with electronic taps and fittings on the wash basins, in the shower cubicles and on the urinals. SWS permits the centralised control and monitoring of all networked taps and fittings, and the automated execution of stagnation flushes to maintain drinking water quality. This effectively minimises the risk of Legionella spreading uncontrolled in the installation. Good user hygiene is ensured thanks to the infrared sensor controls on the XERIS E-T electronic wash basin taps, LINUS DP-C-T shower panels, LINUS D-C-T concealed showers and EDITION E urinal controls. In addition, the ThermoProtect technology integrated into the XERIS E-T wash basin taps and LINUS series shower fittings also offers highly effective anti-scalding protection.

Intelligent water management for drinking water hygiene

The SCHELL SWS Water Management System networks together all of the electronic fittings installed in the new administration building via the central SWS server. The SWS software can be used to adjust individual fitting parameters such as flush intervals, follow-up times and other settings. All data relating to stagnation flushes is logged in full in a digital format, which gives the operators easy access to records of their compliance with the German Drinking Water Regulation. Another key benefit is that, compared with manual flushing, execution of stagnation flushes with SWS saves a huge amount of time, personnel resources and costs.

To conduct thermal disinfections, solenoid valves have been installed in the shower fittings and these solenoid valves can be activated using a key switch.

Electronic fittings for optimised user hygiene

Every week, up to 400 children and young people take part in the wide range of activities on offer at Otto Dullenkopf Park. In the holidays, this number may still be as high as 300. This large group of potential park visitors hugely increases the risk of disease transmission by contact infection. To ensure optimum protection for these young park patrons, a total of eleven XERIS E-T HD-M electronic wash basin taps were installed. The tap’s intelligent infrared sensor control enables especially hygienic operation: the flow of water is triggered without contact and stops automatically once the hands move out of the sensor’s detection range. There is no need to touch the tap with clean hands once handwashing is complete. This sensor control also helps the park owners to reduce their operating costs. Compared with single-lever mixers, SCHELL’s electronic wash basin taps can cut water usage by as much as 70 percent. Less hot water consumed also means more energy saved – and a reduction in overall costs.

In the male toilets, four EDITION E urinal controls were installed, which were combined with the MONTUS urinal modules. These electronic urinal controls feature an infrared sensor, which flushes the urinals economically and hygienically without requiring manual activation by the user.

Anti-scalding protection for young patrons

The park owners viewed anti-scalding protection as especially important, as the sanitary facilities are also used by children. The XERIS E-T HD-M wash basin taps are equipped with a ThermoProtect thermostat. This provides reliable anti-scalding protection to a precise temperature by keeping water temperatures constant during pressure fluctuations and stopping the flow automatically if the cold water line should fail.

In the shower cubicles, four LINUS DP-C-T shower panels plus LINUS D-C-T concealed showers were installed, which are also equipped with SCHELL’s ThermoProtect technology. Shower kits and hand showers from the VITUS series were also fitted, together with COMFORT shower heads that improve showering comfort.
